I came to the Witcher books originally through the video games. I remember playing The Witcher II around 2012 and discovering the franchise was actually based on a series of Polish fantasy novels. I first read The Last Wish in ebook format while staying with family after a large tornado grazed my apartment building and knocked out power across half of town. This is the context under which I first got inside the mind of Geralt of Rivia.
Geralt is my spirit animal. He is fully independent, makes his own way with his wits at the tip of his sword, and he is completely unimpressed by people in power. He is superhumanly strong and quick, he makes and drinks potions to help him kill monsters, and he’s a decent dad on top of it all. I still want to be Geralt when I grow up.
I’m really looking forward to the upcoming Netflix series with Henry Cavill in the titular role. Who is with me on that?
